A Journey to the Dream
HG Music began in the mid-2000s when founder and tutor Hamish Guthrie started teaching music to children and families throughout the Manawatū, New Zealand.
Originally operating as Learn IT Music, lessons were delivered from a community studio and in schools across the region.
The mission was simple - and it hasn't changed:
To make learning music fun, affordable, and accessible.
As life evolved, the original studio closed in 2016, but the vision never disappeared.
In 2024, HG Music was relaunched as an online learning platform, bringing years of teaching experience together with modern technology to help students learn wherever they are in the world.
Today, we're proud to be a New Zealand-owned business helping people of all ages discover the joy of music - one note at a time.

My name is Hamish Guthrie.
I've spent more than two decades helping students of all ages discover the enjoyment of making music.
As both a classroom teacher and private music tutor, I've taught hundreds of learners—from complete beginners picking up an instrument for the very first time through to musicians building confidence and expanding their skills.
The HG Music Academy has been created to provide clear, practical lessons that remove the confusion and help you start making music sooner.
